Milton Vineyards & Winery - Labels are approved by the United States Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) but producer does not make claims to being organic on the labels in the United States because of the addition of Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) as a preservative. If the SO2 levels were under 100ppm SO2 then they could state that the wines are “made with organically grown grapes”. At this time, August 2008, they can not use the BioGro logo because of the addition of SO2. In the United States, in order to make the claim that the wine is “100% organic” the wine must have only naturally occurring SO2. In the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Asia, and Australia Milton Vineyards can make full claims to being organic. (email received 26 August 2008)
The New Zealand Wine Growers during August 2008 stated in their annual labeling guide that "The USDA accepts the New Zealand Food and Safety Association (NZFSA) program for recognition of organic certifying bodies. As such, organic products certified by a NZFSA recognized "third party agency" (TPA) to the USDA - National Organic Standards, are permitted entry into the United States. At present these certifying bodies are BioGro and CertNZ."
